Experience what it’s like to live with dementia by walking in their shoes on Wednesday, August 31st at 1pm. This life-changing simulation teaches us how to provide better care. Donations accepted August 1st to 20th. Children need the proper tools to achieve success in school. Often these tools are as simple as paper, pencils or crayons. The Algoma Public Library is accepting school supply donations on behalf of the children and families in our community that are in need. Donated supplies can be dropped off at the Algoma Public Library.
Examples of Supplies Needed: Scissors, Loose leaf paper, Single subject notebooks, Elmer’s Glue, Pens, Pencils, Color pencils, Glue Sticks, Crayons, Markers, Folders, and Pink Erasers These items will be available for our local teachers to pick up during the annual Teacher Meet and Greet. This Meet and Greet gives teachers the opportunity to come in and connect with the Public Library, set up teacher cards and to talk to library staff on any material needs and or any questions they may have. Travel with John and Gurmit Walch on Wednesday, July 13th at 4 pm as they share their journey to help preserve the oceans and reefs from the Caribbean to S.E. Asia, the S Pacific, Micronesia and the Persian Gulf. 71% of the Earth surface is covered with water an essential requirement for life on Earth which must be preserved if we are to continue living here.
We are helping our tail wagging and feathered friends at Door County Humane Society by gathering pet supplies between June 20th and July 2nd. They are in need of unopened (sealed) bags of dog/ cat food, canned dog/ cat food, peanut butter, potty training pads, non-retractable leashes, dog toys, cleaning supplies (liquid hand/dish soap, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes), plus more! Join us as Nick Legler, a Wisconsin biologist for the DNR’s northern Lake Michigan fisheries team, visits us on Tuesday, June 28th at 1 pm for a discussion on Lake Michigan's salmonid fishery and the Wisconsin DNR's role. Lake Michigan's salmonid fishery is important to many anglers including those locally here in Algoma. He has spent the past 10 years working as a fisheries biologist and recently started as a fisheries team supervisor, both in Sturgeon Bay. As a biologist, he works mostly with chinook salmon and steelhead management for Lake Michigan, along with inland fisheries management for Door and Kewaunee Counties.
Local Abbey C. will be here to lead a rock painting that is ocean themed, we will be painting a cool jellyfish! Registration is recommended as supplies and space are limited. There are 2 times to choose from on Monday, June 27th at 10:30 am or 1 pm.
Summer time is a great time to go traveling right? Or so we think it is. On this trip we have to make sure our plane takes off on time and doesn't detour us to the Bermuda Triangle. Are you prepared to help your fellow travelers out on this journey? It's time to pack our bags and take off! On Friday, June 24th escape rooms start at 2 pm and 3 pm. Registration recommended. The Coast Guard will be down at the Algoma City Marina for a safety talk on Wednesday, June 22nd at 1:30 pm by the Ahnapee River. They will be bringing down one of their boats from Washington Island. Please park by the Algoma Youth Club or at the Public parking lot (not at the marina).
